György Kurtág6 Pieces from Játékok (Games) (seit 1973) for piano

Benjamin Kobler, piano

Janet Sinica, video
Daniel Seitz, sound design

The encounter with the music of György Kurtág and with his person makes one wake up in a flash: how immensely deep and multi-faceted expression can be hidden in a single note, with what immeasurable intensity a few notes can be combined into a phrase, what fine gradations are possible in the way one begins a note and when exactly and how one takes it away again. Is a ritardando a slowing down of an energy, or a loosing itself, or just a losing the thread? Every difference, no matter how small, is searched for and investigated.

Musical work with Kurtág on his music, but also on the great chamber music works of the past, thus resembles initiations and also experiences of awakening.

2 years ago we had the good luck to audition Kurtág’s cycle “Rückblick” in Budapest. In the resulting collaboration he sang “Les Adieux in Janaceks Manier” to me again and again with such an emphasis and never-ending enthusiasm, in order to show me every detail of even the smallest twists and turns and the importance of all nuances. An unforgettable moment of musical happiness! May this Lockdown Tape give you an idea of that happiness.
