Ensemble Musikfabrik

As the state ensemble of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Ensemble Musikfabrik is a key institution in Cologne dedicated to promoting and communicating contemporary music. Since 1990, we have been working internationally to continuously develop the musical forms of expression of our time.

New works emerge through dialogue – for us, interpretation means actively shaping the music. In our rehearsals, we create space for artistic exploration, whilst our concerts and performances are spaces for concentrated experience and public engagement.

We foster influential works of the 20th and 21st centuries whilst also facilitating new compositions. In our programmes, we bring together perspectives, biographies and aesthetic approaches aimed at people with diverse experiences and backgrounds. We expand traditional concert formats through interdisciplinary projects and new forms of presentation. For us, contemporary art music should not be a specialised discourse for an initiated audience, but rather a natural part of the cultural agenda of a pluralistic society.

Our self-managed organisational structure is an expression of this artistic ethos. Together, we make decisions on programmes, collaborations and long-term projects, whilst welcoming diverse perspectives and areas of expertise that shape both our sound and our way of working. This form of collaboration thrives on transparency, shared responsibility and a willingness to critically examine our positions.

Through our own concert series in Cologne and North Rhine-Westphalia, international guest performances and the Musikfabrik Academy, we create platforms for production, outreach and discourse. In doing so, we make contemporary art music as accessible as possible and build lasting relationships with diverse audiences.

Music is an art form with a powerful public impact. It can transform perceptions, embrace difference, open up new spaces for thought and experience, and form temporary communities. Artistic freedom, anti-discriminatory practices and fair production conditions are indispensable prerequisites for this.
Artistic radicalism unleashes its power where it takes on responsibility. The Musikfabrik sees itself as a resonant space in which the present is not merely interpreted and commented upon, but actively shaped.
