A film opera by Michel van der Aa<\/h3>\n

What if our spirit lived forever? What makes us human? Do we need a body to be human? Do we need tactile sensations to be human? Michel van der Aa deals with these and other questions in his film opera Upload<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Van der Aa has embraced the integration of live music and theatre with state-of-the-art video and sound technology. Upload<\/em> tells its story through live action, motion capture technology and immersive 3D film.<\/p>\n

The opera is about a man in his fifties. He suffers from an unnamed disease that is slowly robbing him of his mental life and from which he knows he will die. He is a writer and asks to be uploaded to preserve his spirit and prolong his time with his daughter. The opera follows two timelines: the present, just after he is uploaded; and the recent past, the process of uploading. Free from his failing physical body, he is expected to be happy and not in pain. But something disturbing in the man’s past begins to interfere with his virtual presence – a secret he has kept from his daughter for years.<\/p>\n

Die szenische Urauff\u00fchrung von Michel van der Aas Filmoper \u201eUpload\u201c am Donnerstag bei den Bregenzer Festspielen bescherte den Besuchern auf der Werkstattb\u00fchne einen musikalisch mitrei\u00dfenden Opernabend. Das von Otto Tausk geleitete Ensemble Musikfabrik erzeugt Sph\u00e4ren, dramatisch-rasend und z\u00e4rtlich-warm. Dabei liefert sich die Live-Musik ein Duett mit elektronischen Kl\u00e4ngen so perfekt einstudiert, dass die Grenzen verschwimmen. Im Besonderen aber sorgt die Leistung der S\u00e4nger f\u00fcr H\u00f6hepunkte.

Ein musikalischer Spannungsbogen zieht sich von der ersten bis zur letzten Minute, was neben der meisterhaften Umsetzung sicher auch der Komposition geschuldet ist. Aus wenigen Variablen webt van der Aa eine komplexe Versuchsanordnung, die mit einfachen Mitteln als eindr\u00fcckliches Kammerspiel in Szene gesetzt wird. Die B\u00fchne beherrschen verschiebbare, transparente Stellw\u00e4nden, die als Projektionsfl\u00e4chen dienen; mal gestatten sie einen Blick ins h\u00e4usliche Umfeld (ein schickes Industrieloft mit Blick auf eine Hochhauskulisse), mal erscheint der Vater als Schattenwesen oder in Aufl\u00f6sung begriffen, mal wird in professionell aufbereiteten Werbespots ein Blick in den Klinikalltag gew\u00e4hrt, mal tauchen wir ein in eine diffuse Unterwasserwelt. Das alles wird in Hochglanzoptik vorgef\u00fchrt und genauso stimmig und geschmeidig wie die Inszenierung ist auch van der Aas Musik (Ensemble Musikfabrik unter der Leitung von Otto Tausk). Wie ein Seismograph folgt sie dem inneren und \u00e4u\u00dferen Geschehen und \u00fcbersetzt Spannungsmomente in nerv\u00f6ses Vibrieren.
