Hannah Weirich and Ulrich Löffler about “Datod”

In the middle of the first lockdown, Bethan, whom we had met at Composer Collider Europe, sent us a duo for violin and piano, in case we knew what to do with it … The premiere, like so many things at that time, had been cancelled.

When, a short time later, the first tentative opportunities arose to give small concerts to a reduced audience and our Concertini series was born, it was immediately clear to us that we wanted to premiere “Datod” and add it to our repertoire.

The last project phases of the transnational and EU-funded programme, Composer Collider Europe, could not be carried out as originally planned. While all closing concerts at The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Royal Conservatoire The Hague, and HfMT Köln had to be canceled, a series of final rehearsals and recordings could take place in Cologne in November with some students participating remotely, others in presence. In what follows, the active composers of the last project phase share their reflections on working with the ensemble, professors, and other composition students. Check out the project website for further documentation material and the students’ full field reports.

Even if things turned out unexpectedly different in the end, I consider myself more than lucky having had the chance to work for three years in such an ideal environment. I hope that the project will continue existing, giving the opportunity to as many composers as possible to experience the higher artistic results arising through long term artistic interactions. Antonis Rouvelas, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

My active phase as a composer in CCE had to be conducted remotely because of the Covid-19 crisis. The other active composers and I had individual meetings with the musicians in late April and early May. In June we had an ensemble rehearsal, which was somewhat difficult to do as a video conference, but I still got helpful feedback and the rehearsal was recorded. Wesley Troeger, Royal Conservatoire The Hague

Like everyone else, I was very excited when I learned that I could join CCE and work with Ensemble Musikfabrik. And just as expected, they always strived for perfection and are willing to provide composers with the possibilities as much as possible. I learned lots of things from them, not only about skills of music but also their attitude towards music. Menghao Xie, Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln

From the word go, it has been as though the word ‘no’ doesn’t exist. Even when asking questions I’d heard the answer (‘no’) to before, I was being met with responses akin to, ‘oh hang on, I’m going to need a bit of time with that.’ I have honestly never come across an ensemble in which each and every member is so selflessly devoted to the practice and realisation of new music before. There has been a near-continuous dialogue between composers and players and the fruits of that are in the music. Collectively, we have formed the sorts of memories that will last a lifetime and I will miss everybody dearly moving forward. Bethan Morgan-Williams, Royal Conservatoire The Hague

Stay tuned for the final results of Composer Collider Europe: recordings and spielBar videos will soon be presented on the project website.

My happiest observation was seeing the renowned members of Musikfabrik being an enormous help to all of the composers, suggesting new ways of notating new techniques, or trying to find solutions while simultaneously being genuinely curious and energetic. The whole try-out session period with them felt like a high-intensity running-up-and-down-marathon, grabbing different objects, mallets, cables, effect pedals, or other unique strange instruments to try out on. Getting answers to a never ending amount of questions and engaging into many different conversations: from extended techniques notation and the instrument’s construction and flexibility to different approaches in life, art, philosophy and local restaurants recommendation.

Georgia Koumará, HfMT Köln

Working with the Ensemble Musikfabrik was one of my best musical experiences so far. As a student, it is very rare to have an opportunity to work with such a professional group of players, therefore this was a very special occasion for me.

At first sight, the work ethic and technical capabilities of the players were the things that impressed me. However, during the project it pleased me to realise that in addition to being great virtuoso players, the group is filled with positive energy and friendliness. During the time spent with the ensemble and staff, friendships were formed.

Julian Maple Oliveira, Royal Conservatoire The Hague

Through this process, the first ideas and musical material for my piece ‘An inch above the ground’ were created. The unique timbral characteristics and musical qualities of the musicians of Ensemble Musikfabrik played an integral part in the composition process. The chance to work closely with the musicians as well as the opportunity to get feedback in a relaxed environment gave me a greater sense of freedom to experiment and push boundaries related both to the individual instrumental techniques but also to the greater aesthetic aspects of an ensemble composition.

Mihali Palelogou, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

Another enriching experience were the conversations with the other participants. To talk to people with different backgrounds, biographies, perspectives on music and composition, approaches and aesthetic preferences is a great opportunity to reflect on one’s own positions.

Benjamin Grau, HfMT Köln

We look forward to continuing this enriching experience in 2020 with a final tour in The Hague, Thessaloniki and Cologne in November. Stay tuned!

"The people, students and artists who participated were thrilled and the results of the creative process were really satisfying." - Impressions of Composer Collider Europe phase 3 in Greece

Composer Collider Europe – CCE is a series of transnational activities for composition students and alumni from three partner universities (Cologne, Thessaloniki, Den Haag) and interested amateurs. The program with the support of the European Union offers them the opportunity to work with professional composers, professors and the musicians of Ensemble Musikfabrik.

The work so far has been a unique experience for everybody. During phase 3 in Greece, the composition students Vladimir Guicheff Bogacz (Cologne), Petros Leivadas (Thessaloniki), Zesses Seglias (Thessaloniki) and Sara Zamboni (Den Haag) worked together with Ensemble Musikfabrik on their compositions and put up a great concert:

“After this experience, I got more and more motivation to pursue my composition research (…) the professional and human support I received from the ensemble has convinced me that this is how I should work, that I am on the good track, and I feel more mature in my decisions as a composer and even grown in the organization behind my own daily work schedule. I also realized I was ready for that and that it is possible that this is going to be my job.”
Sara Zamboni

“Having a first performance (and a private recording) is an important help in the process of correcting things and developing the piece (…) This is something new that Composer Collider Europe brings and in this sense, I feel lucky to have my piece performed already in the first concert.”
Zesses Seglias

“There are three main types of experience I can distinguish during these past phases of the Composer Collider Europe Project: Deeper human relations, an approach to a different society and increase of musical knowledge.”
Vladimir Guicheff Bogacz

“I am very much looking forward to continue this journey in the next years, to learn and to collaborate more with such amazing musicians and composers in such a wonderful environment.”
Petros Leivadas

You can read in more detail about the field reports on the CCE website here. We’re looking forward to phase 4 in April in Cologne with new compositions by Georgia Koumará (Cologne), Benjamin Grau (Cologne), Mihali Paleologou(Thessaloniki) and Julian Oliveira (Den Haag)!

For the first time in our workshop series “Composer Collider“, young composers were confronted with the task of writing for the Harry Partch instruments. Supported by the Adam Mickiewick institute three young Polish composers, Wojciech Błażejczyk, Szymon Stanislaw Strzelec and Kuba Krzewinski, had the chance of getting to know the beautiful and delicate instruments, develop their own approach to the Harry Partch sound cosmos and to work together with the conductor Christian Eggen and us, as a professional ensemble for contemporary music.

One result of the collective work was Kuba Krzewinskis piece Inside (2017).

The composer and sound installation artist has recently been working on performances, pieces and installations focussing on the sense of touch. In his piece developed during Composer Collider he was especially interested in „zooming into the point of time when two separate entities become so deeply united that they become one. The edges of bodies blur away, for an instant, they are inside one another.“Combining the Harry Partch instruments with sound objects he developed himself and calls “Ameublement de Musique”, he told us that the main challenge working with the Harry Partch instruments for him was „to enter the unique language of the Harry Partch ‘orchestra’ and try to learn it and speak it within a short amount of time.“ Inside can be described as a cosmos uniting the instruments of Harry Partch and Krzewinskis series of objects.

Concert – Ameublement de musique from Kuba Krzewiński on Vimeo.

„Through colliding my objects / instruments with Partch’s chef-d’oeuvre, hidden qualities of both may be revealed.“

His favourite Partch instrument is the Marimba Eroica: “I see it as the most organic, physical instrument due to its uncanny low vibrations. There is no instrument like that throughout the traditional instrumentarium.“

Have a look below how you can help us to maintain the Harry Partch instruments and to give more composers the chance of getting to know and writing music for the Partch instrumentarium. We are grateful for any support!

Our double bass player Florentin Ginot explains his personal pizzicato technique in this new video tutorial. For this style of play you don’t need a bow, you just use your hands to pluck the strings.

„The technique was developed among others by Stefano Scodanibbio, double bass player and composer. You can find it for example in the Sequenza XIVb by Luciano Berio in his transcription for double bass. This is a very useful example of notation if you want to write it down“, said Florentin about the technique he is presenting. By showing examples he is illustrating the different steps to create for instance rhythmic patterns or four sound chords.

Have a look and enjoy the examples he is giving.
