Dirk Wietheger, whose musical interest began like many others within the family, was born in 1972. He began learning the cello in order to complement the family string quartet. Although this was soon augmented with composition and conducting, he stayed faithful to the cello and decided very early on to become a professional musician. During his studies in Dortmund, Detmold, Hannover and Würzburg he took part in masterclasses with, amongst others, David Geringas und Heinrich Schiff and gathered valuable experience with the Hof Symphony, the Essen Philharmonic and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Parallel to this was his dedication to concerts involving contemporary music. A collaboration with Helmut Lachenmann in 1996 enabled him to gain valuable experience with his instrument, that led to further experimentation with unusual sounds. “In music, especially in contemporary music, I wish to experience something new”. The communication with other musicians and his own personal involvement in fulfilling such a goal, is very important for him. His membership in the soloists ensemble musikFabrik is an ideal platform for this.
